The One East Kentucky region is home to dozens of country music legends like Chris Stapleton, Loretta Lynn, Dwight Yoakam and many more.  It is only fitting that we have an abundant amount of entertainment options.  Whether you are interested in local festivals, arts & crafts, nationally known music performers or an off-Broadway show, you will find it here.  And if History is your forte, we are home to the classic feud between the Hatfields & McCoys, as seen on the popular History Channel mini-series.

The Great Outdoors!  East Kentucky has an abundance of outdoor recreation and activities.  The Breaks Interstate Park boasts the nations deepest gorge east of the Grand Canyon; Natural Bridge State Park is home to a wonder of nature and invites rock climbers from around the country; Mountain rivers encourage kayaking and even class 5 whitewater rafting in the fall; Jenny Wiley State Park is home to East Kentucky’s largest lake; Golf enthusiasts will love our courses, especially the mountaintop course at StoneCrest; and of course, all other manner of outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and a growing culture ofcompetitive running.

Two of our cities have the highest retail sales per capita in the state of Kentucky (2007).  From local shops to national big-box stores, much of what you need is close-by.  Of course, you can always take a short drive to Lexington, KY, Charleston, WV, or Kingsport, TN for even more retail options.  We are also blessed to have local restaurateurs serving up delectable dishes around the region.  From seasonal favorites at the Blue Raven in Pikeville, dining at the Brickhouse in Prestonsburg or taking in Hawaiian flavors at Lizzie B’s restaurant and microbrewery, we are sure to be able to satisfy your cravings!

Educational opportunities are plentiful in the mountains, with focus on the healthcare industry.  The University of Pikeville boasts the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine, Elliot School of Nursing and the latest $60 Million addition, the Kentucky School of Optometry.  The Kentucky Community and Technical College System has three colleges with a total of 9 campuses in the region: Big Sandy, Hazard and Southeast Community & Technical Colleges.  These schools focus on workforce ready training and certificates.  Add to that the East Kentucky Advanced Manufacturing Institute, and you can see why our workforce is considered the most highly skilled and readily available in the state!  Additionally, Alice Lloyd College, Morehead State University and Sullivan University have campuses within the region.  MSU’s main campus is just an hour from the area.
